13-year-old boy accused of planning mass shooting at Ohio synagogue

A 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged after allegedly planning a mass shooting at an Ohio synagogue.

The boy, who has not been identified because he is a minor, made a “detailed plan to complete a mass shooting” at Temple Israel in Canton, according to court documents obtained by WKYC.

Law enforcement was alerted after the plan was posted on Discord, a messaging app also previously used by other mass shooters to discuss plans and ideologies.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office said it learned of the alleged plot on September 1, weeks before Hamas terrorists launched their surprise attack on Israel, sparking a dramatic rise in anti-Semitic hatred.

He then alerted several people and agencies within the school system about the alleged plot, “which caused significant public harm,” according to court documents.

It’s unclear whether any weapons were found when the teen was arrested or how serious his intentions were.

The boy was charged with misdemeanors of inducing panic and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to face those charges in court next week, the sheriff’s office said.

The Post contacted the Stark County Sheriff’s Office for more information.

The Post also contacted the synagogue for comment. His rabbi declined to comment to Cleveland 19, citing the boy’s young age.

The Anti-Defamation League of Cleveland said it was “horrified that a young teenager has been arrested and charged with planning a mass shooting at a synagogue in Canton, Ohio.

“We thank the authorities for their thorough investigation.” said Wednesday.

“And for young people like this suspect, we hope this is a learning moment. Hate and threats on social media, as in real life, cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Although the alleged plot took place before the Hamas attack on October 7, news of the plot comes amid a rise in anti-Semitic attacks.

There were 2,031 anti-Semitic incidents reported in the United States between October 7 (when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel) and December 7, according to preliminary data released by the ADL.

This is more anti-Semitic incidents reported than in any other two-month period in the past 45 years, when the Anti-Defamation League began keeping such statistics, the group said.

It is also a 337% increase compared to the same two-month period in 2022, when 465 incidents were documented.

The figure is also nearly triple the previous high of about 45 years over a two-month span: October and November of last year, when 741 incidents were recorded, an ADL representative told The Post.

The ADL, which was founded in 1913 and began recording anti-Semitic incidents in 1979, called the increase “unprecedented.”

“This terrifying pattern of anti-Semitic attacks has been relentless since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, and there are no signs of abating,” said ADL Executive Director Jonathan Greenblatt.

“The manhole cover is open and Jewish communities across the country are being inundated with hate.”
