1904 – Jamsetji Tata Death Anniversary – The Man Who Saw Tomorrow

May 19 is the death anniversary of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group and a renowned Indian entrepreneur, philanthropist and industrialist. For his valuable contribution to the field of industry, he was also known as the ‘Father of Indian Industry’. To him goes the credit of establishing the city of Jamshedpur.

1995 – World’s Youngest Doctor Balamurali Ambati

Balamurali Ambati became the youngest doctor and was listed on the Guinness Book of World Records at the age of 17 on May 19, 1995.

1971- The first naval submarine station was built at Visakhapatnam

INS Virbahu was commissioned as the shore support base for submarines on 19 May 1971. With the commissioning of INS Virbahu the 8th Submarine Squadron of Vela (Foxtrot) class submarines was based here. The Commanding Officer INS Virbahu was also designated as the Captain of Submarine 8th Submarine Squadron.

1980 – General Tapishwar Narain Raina died

General Tapishwar Narain Raina assumed charge of the Indian Army, as the 10th Chief of Army Staff, on 15 May 1975. His early education was done at Ludhiana, Punjab because his father – Pandit B.N. Raina – was posted there as a head postmaster. 

He was appointed as the Indian High Commissioner to Canada in February 1979. He passed away on 19 May 1980 in Ottawa, Canada during his tenure as the Indian High Commissioner.

1649 – England became a Commonwealth

England was declared a Commonwealth by an act of the Rump Parliament on May 19, 1649. 

1897 – Oscar Wilde released from Prison

Oscar Wilde was released from prison after 2 years on May 19, 1897, after being found guilty of homosexuality which was a crime in 19-century England. His prison experiences are the crux of his book: Reading Gaol.
