Who was the woman?
Safina Namukwaya has earned the distinction of being Africa’s oldest person to give birth after welcoming her two babies into the world.
What happened?
On Wednesday afternoon, Safina reportedly gave birth to a girl and a boy via cesarean section. Doctors have hailed the pregnancy as a “medical success” and stressed that Safina and her two little ones are in good health.
The mother has undoubtedly had an extraordinary journey over the past nine months, compounded by her forty-year struggle with fertility before finally conceiving.
Where did you give birth?
Safina underwent surgery to give birth to twins at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center in Kampala, Uganda.
Why did you want to give birth at 70 years old?
In 2020, she experienced the joy of giving birth for the first time and welcomed her baby girl, Sarah. Safina shared that she had faced harassment and social stigma in her community due to her inability to have children prior to this time.
She said at the time: “Many people judged and abused me for being infertile, but I decided to leave everything in the hands of the Almighty God, who finally answered my prayers.”
After the successful birth of her first daughter, Safina underwent additional IVF treatment to bring her twins into the world. However, this particular pregnancy did not go as well as the previous one.
Over the past nine months, the mother of three has faced several challenges, including health complications and personal struggles.
While Safina has made history in Africa, she is not the oldest woman to give birth. Erramatti Mangayamma, who underwent IVF treatment in India, gave birth to twin girls in 2019 at the age of 74.
