After Self-Checkout Stores, Amazon Launches First-Ever Floating Store On Srinagar’s Dal Lake

On July 27, Amazon India made a big announcement. They launched a unique store on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. This is the company’s first-ever floating store. The store is part of their ‘I Have Space’ delivery program, which started in 2015.

The program helps them deliver packages to customers in faraway places using local shops and partners. They have about 28,000 partners in 420 towns and cities all over India.

For one Amazon customer, Burhan Farooq, who has been a customer for three years, getting packages has been somewhat of a challenge. He feels lucky to live on a beautiful houseboat on Dal Lake. But delivering packages to his boat is tricky because of the scenic waters.

He recounts that while he always gets his packages on time, it is no easy task. “While my orders have always been delivered on time, I had to embark on a journey by using my own shikara towards Ghat No. 7 at Dal Lake to receive the package,” Farooq explained.

Before, delivering packages was slow and needed careful planning to avoid missing orders. But everything changed quickly when Amazon India started using a floating ‘I Have Space’ store in June.

Farooq explained how things had changed for the better: “This development has made my life so convenient. I no longer need to trek to Ghat No. 7. Amazon’s ‘I Have Space’ Partner, Murtaza, ensures that my packages are brought directly to the doorstep of my houseboat.”
