Chances are if you live in a metropolitan area, then you treat yourself to some local delicacies quite often. Getting food delivered to your doorstep has been a concept that was introduced to Indian customers some 15 years ago when companies like Zomato, Swiggy, and FoodPanda came aboard.
Now, after years of having integrated these brands and services into our daily lives, customers are not only privy to the workings of these companies but also have the opportunity to question their means and methods.

Customer Gets Charged Rs 60 For Packaging On Zomato Order In Ahmedabad
In a recent tweet going viral, a customer from Ahmedabad came forward to call out Zomato. Again and again, there are times when customers find out about unfair fees added by food delivery apps, leading them to express their dissatisfaction on social media channels.
In the most recent incident that took place in Ahmedabad, a woman was surprised by the costs when she ordered supper from Zomato. Things were going well until the woman inspected the receipt that she received with her order from the restaurant and found out that she was levied extra fees for the food containers.
This unnecessary add-on to her bill fumed her. So, she went on Twitter and asked Zomato to explain why she was given such a total on her order which was placed through the company’s app.
On X, customer Khushboo Thakkar shared a picture of her bill. It showed that she paid Rs 180 for three theplas and Rs 60 extra for the containers they were delivered in. Interestingly, each thepla cost Rs 60, the same as the container charge.
Container charge is equivalent to the item that I have ordered ₹60 for the container charge Seriously?? @zomato @zomatocare @zomato#zomato #zomato pic.twitter.com/2ceQFgiB5h

Zomato Responded To The Angry Customer’s Query
Before long, her tweet got a lot of attention, and many other people joined in with their thoughts. Some agreed with her and criticised the restaurant and held them responsible. Others said she should have checked the packaging costs before ordering.
Zomato responded to the tweet and explained the breakdown of the taxes on the bill. The company’s representative also clarified that the cost of packaging is not added by them but is the cost that is levied by the restaurant separately. In the tweet, Zomato also clarified that they make no money from the cost of containers added to the bill by the restaurant.
The tweet read, “Hey Khushboo, taxes are the same for everyone and change from 5 percent to 18 percent based on the food type. The cost for packaging is added by the restaurants themselves, and they’re the ones who use and make money from this.”
Hi Khushboo, while taxes are universal and vary from 5 – 18% depending on the type of food. Packaging charges are levied by our restaurant partners, they are the ones who implement and earn from this practice. For further clarification please feel free to initiate a private (1/2)
