American woman living near Gaza offers first-hand account of how Hamas opened fire on Israel: ‘I’ve never been so scared’

Adele Raemer, 68, originally from the Bronx, moved to Israel in 1975 and lives on a kibbutz a mile from Gaza. A day before Hamas’ attack on Israel, the retired teacher posted a video celebrating the 77th anniversary of Kibbutz Nirim. Hours later, terror broke out, which Raemer documented on Facebook. Speaking to the Post’s Doree Lewak after a harrowing 17-hour day, a weary Raemer said: “I’m safe, for now. Sure”. Three members of the kibbutz and nine terrorists died. Her grandchildren’s house was infiltrated by terrorists, who were shot by her son-in-law.

6:33 am: Suddenly, out of nowhere, a massive bombardment, non-stop.

7:26 am: For the last hour, Israel has been under major attack. This is unprecedented. We’ve never had anything like this before. The sheer number of rockets firing at the same time is overwhelming for Iron Dome. So I don’t know where we go from here, but this is war. There is no way around that. I don’t know if you can hear the explosions in the background.

8:12 am: “I’m in my safe room with my son. We close the doors and we can’t get out, and I must say this is very scary. I’ve never been so scared in my life. Terrorists have infiltrated Israel and that is in addition to massive rocket attacks. If you’re the praying type, he prays for us.

8:53 am: Apparently there is an infiltration in or near my community. We have been told to lock the doors and not leave the safe room. We don’t even turn on the air conditioning for fear that it will indicate the presence of people in the house. My stomach is upset. I hear a lot of gunshots, even through the thick walls of the safe room. I need to go to the bathroom, but I don’t dare. I have literally never been so scared.

10:51 am: Still locked in, terrorists tried to break into my house. So far they have not succeeded.

11:18 am: Massive machine gun fire is heard. I have no idea if the IDF is here yet.

12:00: I’m very thirsty, but I try to drink small sips so I don’t have to go to the bathroom.

12:55 pm: I appreciate everyone telling me to stay safe, showing that many care, but with terrorists going house to house, I honestly don’t know how you do that.

3:16 pm: We have been notified that help is imminent, but we must remain locked down. (And I quickly left to go to the bathroom..)

4:54 pm: Still waiting to be evacuated. Hopefully I have time to grab my shoes, my medications, and my bag. There are still terrorists outside and the community is slowly being moved to a safer location. We’re still locked in the safe room.
