Ashameera Aiyappan Movie Reviews
- Don (2022) – “Don It is a well-intentioned film. It is intended to talk about the well-oiled processing machine that is our educational system. No matter what the input is, the output must be the same. It also aims to talk about the unwavering faith that Indian parents have in this system. But for a film with such lofty ideals, Don’s writing rarely addresses the nuances. He only deals with the extremes. For example, the two main ‘villains’ of the film are Chakravarthy’s father and the disciplinary director of his college, Boominathan (SJ Suryah). They are predominantly one-note characters. If Chakravathy’s father is obsessed with grades, Boominathan is obsessed with discipline. His behavior is shown to be on the verge of tyranny. But then this is rationalized in just a few seconds and they magically transform into kinder, more empathetic humans when they realize that Chakravarthy has a “dream”. There is no denying that they may want the best for their child/student. But his good intentions do not erase the emotional trauma that Chakravarthy faces due to his behavior. Reality doesn’t work in binaries, but this is the nuance you can’t expect from it. Don’s writing.”
- Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal (2022) – “Vignesh Shivan Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, starring Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Samantha, believes it is making a strong case for polyamory. However, what the film defends is patriarchy and sexism. Sure, one can have multiple partners if everyone involved knows it and agrees to be a part of it. But in our society, and by extension Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, this is reserved only for man. It’s not that the film doesn’t realize this. Try to present weak arguments to make it politically correct. But you know where your heart is and what you are trying to normalize. The film tries very hard to make us empathize with Rambo (Vijay Sethupathi), to make us think that he is a “good” guy, that it is okay for him to love and be with Kanmani (Nayanthara) and Khatija (Samantha). ). The film has some nicer moments. The romance even works independently, but they get lost in the midst of the problematic issues. Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal ends up being a warning for women. It normalizes, glorifies, and romanticizes every patriarchal trope that women are expected to tolerate. It shows how even if the man does the bare minimum (helps someone out of a difficult situation and is a decent human being) he will be praised for being a saint. However, women need to work very hard to achieve that title. They have to forget all the lies, emotional manipulation and completely avoid any kind of responsibility. Because? Because he’s a ‘good boy’ — come on, he doesn’t hit you, right! What else do you want?”
- GanguBhai (2022) – “One of the strongest principles of patriarchy is to burden women with the total responsibility for sex and secular accusations. If it is premarital, then the woman is called a whore. In a marriage, there are accusations of ‘worldly mudiyarathu‘. Even in extramarital affairs, the other woman is more to blame than the man involved. Unfortunately, also in the case of rape the frequent response is that she probably asked for it. Our cultural system absolves men of responsibility and holds women responsible and judges them for the same. In a way, this bias is at the heart of the discourse of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest film, Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt in the lead role. “They are men from your localities who come here, but why are we immoral and they are not?” asks Gangubai, in a moving speech at Azad Maidan. “We are victims, but we are being punished. We have the right to education, health and a dignified life,” she argues. Gangubai Kathiwadi is inspired by the life of sex worker Gangubai Kothewali, also known as Gangubai Kathiawadi, one of Mumbai’s influential brothel owners in the 1950s and 1960s. The film is based on a chapter from the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi, which chronicles the life of Gangubai and her career in lobbying for the rights of commercial sex workers.
