California pilot dies when ‘homemade experimental’ plane crashes, feds say

One person was killed when a “home-built experimental” single-engine plane crashed just a block from a Southern California airport.

The deadly incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Auburndale and West Rincon streets in the city of Corona, located about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

The plane, described by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as a Van’s Aircraft RV-8 sold in kit form, crashed into a tree, killing the pilot, who was the only person on board.

The victim had not been identified as of early Monday morning.

The air disaster caused a small vegetation fire that, according to local authorities, was extinguished shortly after by Corona firefighters.

The accident was reported minutes after the plane took off from the nearby Corona Municipal Airport, according to preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration, broadcaster KTLA reported.

It was not immediately known what caused the plane to fall from the sky.
