It is said that the late Apple CEO used a “beer test” before hiring candidates for his company. Under normal circumstances, a job interview goes about in a rather mundane fashion. The setup often involves a face-to-face conversation with the candidate, with occasional tasks involved for the interviewee to complete.

However, if you were an interviewee meeting Jobs, the experience would go about in an unorthodox manner. While most job interviews require the candidate to be formal and serious, Jobs was aware of how daunting the experience of appearing for a job interview at Apple could be.

He wanted to switch up the basics and “break” the trend. He wanted something different than just the usual memorised list of answers and parrot-like replies. So, Jobs would drop the formalities and keep things casual.

Job did not just consider if he would have a casual chug of beer with the candidates or a simple stroll around the park. He took action upon his considerations. The Apple co-founder would apparently take his interview candidates on a walk or even have a cheeky swig of beer together in order to decide if he wanted to hire them or not.

His method allowed Steve Jobs to make a rather warm and open atmosphere between him and the applicant which would give him a chance to have an honest conversation with them – obviously given the fact the interviewees could get over their initial bewilderment of having a glass of beer with the literal CEO of Apple.

During his time with these candidates, Jobs would reportedly ask them questions like, “When was the last time you accomplished something?” or casually swing in with a “What did you do last summer?”

Jobs was never actually looking for the right answers rather his goal during these casual meets was to get to know his potential employees better. He did so to sort out the “A-Players” from the rest. 

He believed, “I found that when you get enough A-players together, when you go through the incredible job of finding these A-players, they really like working with each other. Because they’ve never had the chance to do it before.”
