WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis drew a stark contrast between himself and Donald Trump after the former president recently joked that he would benefit from the economic crisis.
Without mentioning Trump by name, DeSantis insisted he wanted the country’s economy to flourish even though the former president was counting on financial failure.
“I don’t want the economy to collapse because people’s livelihoods depend on it,” DeSantis told reporters Tuesday when asked about Trump’s comments during a brief meeting after his town hall on Fox News.
“If the economy collapses, people will be out of work and businesses will go under. I don’t want that to happen. I want people to do well. That’s what we’ve done in Florida.”
Trump reflected on what a faltering economy could do for him politically in an interview broadcast Monday.

“When there is an accident, I hope it will be in the next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The only president… I just don’t want to be Herbert Hoover,” Trump told Lindell TV.
President Biden has sought to capitalize on his economic record and promote the so-called “Bidenomy” at campaign events, highlighting low unemployment and declining inflation.
Republicans, including Trump and DeSantis, have criticized his record and blamed Biden for the rampant inflation that plagued the middle class early in his administration.
During the brief press conference, DeSantis also addressed some issues that arose during his town hall meeting with Iowa voters.

He downplayed concerns about alienating his potential voters who are receptive to Trump, suggesting the 45th president has too much baggage to win the general.
“Remember the midterm results in 2022. We had the most favorable conditions as Republicans for a midterm, probably in my lifetime,” DeSantis said.
“There are a lot of people who want to vote Republican. But I think there are many who are not going to do the same as Trump,” she continued.
When asked if he supports greater access to contraception, DeSantis explained that he would make them available without a prescription.

“We think it should be free for sale. I don’t think you should need a prescription. And in Florida, the Florida Department of Health, we use contraceptives for about 100,000 people a year,” DeSantis responded.
He is scheduled to face former South Carolina governor and US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley during the CNN debate on Wednesday.
During the press conference, DeSantis broke down his final message that she is the most electable presidential hopeful.
“You don’t win as a Republican if you don’t defend anything. You have to have fundamental convictions,” he stressed. “He ran for re-election in one of the reddest states in the country, South Carolina, in 2014, in a big Republican year.”

“She underperformed almost every Republican on the ballot, like Tim Scott, significantly,” he continued, juxtaposing her re-election in Florida in the 2022 cycle.
DeSantis was flanked by Bob Vander Plaats, a prominent Iowa Christian evangelical leader, and Rep. Chip Roy (R-Tx.), both of whom endorsed him.
The 2024 Iowa Republican caucuses are scheduled to begin next Monday.
