What happened?

A 37-year-old woman (name withheld) recently discovered an unusual and confusing pregnancy abnormality, which was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.

When she went to the doctor complaining of an unbearable upset stomach, they discovered that she was 23 weeks pregnant and that the fetus was growing inside her abdomen instead of her uterus.

This unique example highlights an unprecedented circumstance because only 1% of ectopic pregnancies (pregnancies in which a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus) involve abdominal ectopic pregnancies.

Ectopic pregnancies usually arise in the fallopian tubes and account for less than 2% of all pregnancies.

When scans revealed the abdominal ectopic pregnancy, doctors were shocked.

How risky is this?

This situation puts the mother at serious risk of internal bleeding, ruptured tubes or shock, with minimal chances of survival for the fetus. The woman’s symptoms included excruciating pain in her abdomen, increasing swelling and the possibility of potentially fatal consequences.

Given this unusual medical situation, the medical staff transferred the expectant mother to a tertiary hospital as soon as possible. The baby was born at 29 weeks, against all odds in such circumstances, and was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Babies are generally considered viable at 24 weeks gestation, with a 60% to 70% chance of survival. However, the chances of survival increase dramatically to between 80% and 90% after 28 weeks.

After navigating potential problems, the woman and child were successfully discharged about three months after giving birth, signaling an incredible medical adventure that has come to an end.
