President Joe Biden said Wednesday that Israel has agreed to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza from Egypt. They will inspect the shipments to make sure they are going to civilians, not Hamas militants.
What did Biden say?
“I understand. Many Americans understand it,” Biden said, comparing the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States that killed nearly 3,000 people.
“You can’t see what has happened here and not scream for justice. As long as you feel that anger, don’t let yourself be consumed by it.”
Following a Hamas attack that caused nearly 1,400 casualties in Israel, Israel ceased the flow of food, fuel and water to the Gaza Strip.
This situation led to a stalemate in the mediators’ efforts to provide supplies to civilians, aid groups and hospitals.
An explosion at a hospital in the Gaza Strip made the suffering even worse.
Israel confirmed that food, water and medicine would be sent to Gaza via Egypt, but the exact start time remained uncertain.
The cause of the hospital explosion was the subject of conflicting claims. Gaza officials immediately attributed it to an Israeli airstrike, but Israel refuted this claim.
Israel presented a raft of evidence, including videos and audio recordings, to support its claim that the explosion was due to a missile failure committed by Islamic Jihad, a different militant group in Gaza. Islamic Jihad, however, rejected this explanation.
On Wednesday, President Biden stated that Department of Defense data indicated that an Israeli military strike was unlikely.
A National Security Council spokesperson later posted on social media that its image analysis intercepted communications, and publicly available information also noted that Israel was not responsible for the attack. However, the United States is still gathering evidence.
“From what I’ve seen, it looks like the other team did it, not you.” Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a meeting. But he said “many people” were not sure what caused the explosion, which sparked protests across the Middle East.
Biden said he had spoken with the Israeli cabinet “to agree on the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza, based on the understanding that there will be inspections and the aid will go to civilians and not Hamas.”
“Let me be clear,” Biden said. If Hamas diverts or steals aid, he will have demonstrated once again that he does not care about the well-being of the Palestinian people.”
Biden also revealed an additional $100 million in humanitarian assistance for Gaza and the West Bank.
