The sentencing judge said Coronel quickly accepted responsibility and agreed to turn over nearly $1.5 million of the proceeds of his criminal activity to the U.S. government, and his three-year sentence was later reduced.

The Bureau of Prisons said on its website that it would release Coronel on Wednesday from a low-security confinement institution in Los Angeles, without providing further details.

Guzmán, meanwhile, is serving a life sentence in the United States after being extradited there in 2017 following two escapes from maximum-security Mexican prisons, one of them by digging a mile-long tunnel from his cell.

Coronel’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It is unclear whether he faces charges for drug trafficking or other crimes within Mexico.

Coronel was also granted two more years of supervised release.

Coronel has two daughters with Guzmán, whom she met when she was a young beauty queen and married in 2007 at age 18.
