A Detroit Fire Department paramedic was placed on leave Friday after he was found to be under the influence of alcohol when he crashed an ambulance with a patient being transported in the back, authorities said.
The paramedic, whom the fire department did not identify, sideswiped three cars while driving the patient through the city of Hamtramck shortly after midnight Friday, about five miles north of downtown Detroit, the Fire Department said. of Detroit in a statement.
After the accident, he waited for the police to arrive.
The paramedic, who has worked with the department for six years, was tested per department protocol and was found to be under the influence of alcohol.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy for on-duty alcohol use and will take appropriate action,” Detroit Fire Department Commissioner Chuck Simms said in a statement.
“We have an excellent team of paramedics and paramedics at DFD and unfortunately this incident detracts from the work they do every day to save lives.”

Simms added: “We have support programs and services in place for our employees who may be struggling with issues such as alcohol dependency and we will redouble our efforts to ensure that any employee who may need them knows how to access them.”
The patient in the back of the ambulance was not injured.
The department said the paramedic has had no previous accidents or alcohol-related incidents.
