Tomato prices have risen in recent weeks, rising from Rs 20 per kg on average to Rs 250 per kg in some parts of the country. Due to rising prices, this Indian staple has become a treasured commodity, to the point where people are asking their NRI relatives to bring tomatoes instead of gifts.

In one case, a Dubai-based daughter asked her Indian mother what she wanted from the United Arab Emirates city known for its luxury shopping. Her mother asked her to bring 10 kilograms of tomatoes.

A Twitter user with the handle ‘Revs’ reported the incident on the microblogging network.

“My sister is coming to India from Dubai for her children’s summer vacation and she asked my mother if she wanted anything from Dubai and my mother said to bring 10kg of tomatoes. So now she has packed 10kg of tomatoes in a suitcase and has sent them,” she tweeted.

Very relatable. Amma bought tomatoes from Amutham today for ₹60/kg and they were all small and overripe now she plans to make some Thokku. 😂 I’m like why go shopping? 🙈 https://t.co/E1eezZOhLr

Meanwhile, despite the fact that the rising price of tomatoes continues to burn a hole in the pocket of the average man, a farmer in Pune has become a billionaire by selling his bumper crop of the vital kitchen staple for Rs 3 crores in less than a month.

As for tomato prices in India, the central government announced on Wednesday that it ordered NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Ltd.) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India) to start selling tomatoes at a retail price of Rs 70 per kg on Thursday. Initially, NCCF and NAFED procured tomatoes which retailed at Rs 80 per kg until 16 July.
