Electric pickup trucks aren’t a thing of the future, they’re here now, thanks to the arrival of models like the Rivian R1T and GMC’s Hummer EV. It’s only the beginning though, as many more are coming in the near future. While Tesla obviously has its Cybertruck in the works, EV trucks from traditional brands like Ford and Chevy, as well as other manufacturers, are on the way.

Ford F-150 Lightning
Since Ford is the maker of America’s best-selling pickup truck, its plans to develop an all-electric edition are noteworthy. It will be called the F-150 Lightning, which will debut in spring 2022 with a price tag of just under $42,000 for the base model, while other models will command a higher price tag. It will include four-wheel drive as a standard feature and will be powered by either a 98.0 kWh or 131.0 kWh battery pack. This one will boast over 420 horsepower and an estimated range of 230 miles. Top-trim models will have up to 563 horsepower and up to 300 miles of range.

Chevy will release a Silverado EV edition by 2024, but it won’t look much like the gas-powered version. Like the Ford F-150, the Silverado EV will also feature four-wheel drive, but boasts a range of 400 miles on a single charge. Needless to say, the new Chevy EV pickup has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, interested buyers will have to wait until 2023, when the Silverado EV is expected to hit dealerships. Additionally, higher-end models like the Trail Boss and RST will be options.
GMC Sierra EV
As mentioned, GMC has the Hummer EV that recently hit the market, but it will be accompanied by an electric version of the Sierra pickup. It is estimated to have a range of up to 400 miles and resembles the Chevy Silverado EV. The GMC Sierra EV is also likely to be available in 2023.
Tesla Cybertruck
With Tesla’s Cybertruck, it seems the company wants people to forget what they’re thinking when you say “truck.” The unique truck deviates from the norms people think of for a truck, boasting an odd wedge shape and a DeLorean-esque stainless steel exterior. According to Tesla, the Cybertruck is dent, scratch and even bullet proof. Despite its odd appearance, it can reportedly tow 14,000 pounds and travel more than 500 miles on a full charge, making it more competitive than other currently available EVs.
It’s also fast. It can hit 60 mph in just three seconds and has adjustable air suspension that can be set higher than 15 inches off the ground.
The Tesla Cybertruck was previously scheduled for a 2022 launch, but the schedule for its debut is currently unknown.
toyota tacoma electric
Toyota has revealed its plan to develop an electric truck in the coming years. No details on the next pickup have been released though, although all expectations are pointing to the next iteration of the Tacoma.
Canoo Truck
The Canoo pickup is intended as a contemporary electric version of the Volkswagen Transporter or Chevy Corvair pickups of the past. The Canoo has a cab-forward layout but no formal hood. It doesn’t look like any other truck available today, but it’s adaptable like other midsize trucks we see.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but we may see the Canoo Truck in 2023 if the plan is followed.
