Elizabeth Tsurkov is a dual national Israeli-Russian academic who is known for her knowledge of Middle Eastern issues, particularly the ongoing civil war in Syria. She has conducted research, worked with human rights organizations, and attended Princeton University for her doctoral studies. Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, who went missing in Iraq at the end of March, has yet to be found. In order to find her whereabouts and guarantee her safe return, the situation continues to be worrying. Tsurkov is a renowned professor who focuses on Middle Eastern issues, particularly the conflict-torn country of Syria. She was a prominent human rights activist in the area with years of experience and, at the time of her disappearance, she was a doctoral student at Princeton University.
Tsurkov was reportedly kidnapped by the Iranian-backed Shiite militia Kataeb Hezbollah, also known as the Hezbollah Brigades, which is on the US government’s list of terrorist organizations. The group’s leader, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was killed in a US airstrike near Baghdad International Airport in January 2020. Tsurkov last used his Twitter account to communicate on March 21. He had stated that he wanted to leave Iraq and return to the United States to finish his thesis. His co-workers at the Washington-based think tank New Lines Institute said he had been kidnapped by a pro-Iranian militia in Baghdad, raising suspicions.
New Lines Institute staff first chose not to speak about the incident to respect the family’s wishes and promote a speedy resolution. Unaware of their release, they approached the US and foreign governments, as well as Princeton University, for help. Although Tsurkov is not a United States citizen, they pleaded with the administration to help secure her release. Tsurkov’s family, based in Israel, expressed concern about the circumstance and blamed the Iraqi authorities for guaranteeing her safety. Tsurkov entered Iraq using her Russian passport because Israel and Iraq have no official ties.
