Elon Musk, the billionaire space entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Inc., was named the latest ‘Person of the Year’ by Time magazine yesterday. According to Time, Elon Musk exemplified the dramatic changes in technology this year, and his inventive ideas helped people around the world.
Musk, who surpassed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest person last year, is making an impact on the ground with his Tesla electric car company and beyond with his SpaceX rockets.
Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal noted: “Musk’s ascension coincides with larger trends, of which he and his fellow tech moguls are part cause and part effect.”
Felsenthal identified some of these trends as “the erosion of conventional institutions in favor of the people; government dysfunction that has given companies more authority and responsibility; and disparities in wealth and opportunity.
The honor, which went to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris last year, was previously defined by Time editors as bestowed on people who “embodied what was important this year, for better or worse.”
Musk’s electric car company was valued at more than $1 trillion in October, and SpaceX partnered with NASA to launch numerous missions, including a test flight to defend Earth from an asteroid.
According to Forbes’ real-time billionaires list, the arrogant 50-year-old born in South Africa has seen his wealth rise to nearly $250 billion during the pandemic. He also sparked controversy with his incendiary Twitter feed, which he can criticize, joke and provoke, including a poll in November that asked him whether he should sell a 10% stake in Tesla.
Musk’s radical vision is accompanied by a character who is a “blank instrument who frequently seems to revel in divisiveness and hostile mockery while offering the world access to his identification via social media,” according to Felsenthal.
Musk has become increasingly visible in American culture in recent years, amassing 66 million followers on Twitter and as a guest host on Saturday Night Live in May. Musk has expressed his interest in settling on Mars and is planning orbital flights as part of SpaceX’s planned US return to the Moon next year.
“In general, the goal has been to make life multiplanetary and allow humanity to become a spacefaring civilization,” Musk said in an interview with Time that coincided with the Person of the Year announcement.

“SpaceX has started a program to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and convert it into rocket fuel. If you’re interested, join.” Later Monday, he tweeted an announcement that was both flashy and lacking in detail.
Musk has been known to impact markets and cryptocurrency values with a single tweet, but his biggest ground effect, by far, is through his electric cars.
“Our goal with Tesla has always been to set an example for the auto industry, and we hope others will follow suit and build electric cars too so we can accelerate the transition to sustainable energy,” Musk told Time.
Interplanetary travel was once a collaborative venture that leaders used to unify their nations, but now private companies are increasingly involved, according to Time.
“For Musk, it’s progress,” Felsenthal wrote, “moving the allocation of capital away from the government and toward the people who will be good stewards of it.” “For others, it is a testament to the failures of capitalism,” he continued, “as staggeringly wealthy, mostly white men follow their own rules while the rest of society lags behind.”
