Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and Vice President Joe Biden have a strained relationship. Musk seems to be irritated by the fact that Biden practically never mentions Tesla, even when he talks about electric vehicles, although the reasons for this omission are unknown.
Now a CNBC story sheds some light on why this is the case, though Musk’s response may not help speed up the process. According to people familiar with the situation, the White House has no imminent plans to invite Musk to any meetings with top executives, fearing he could “embarrass the president.”
Given Musk’s odd sense of humor and that time he mocked Biden for “still sleeping,” a likely allusion to Trump’s jokes about “Sleepy Joe” Biden, such suspicions are not entirely unfounded. Musk likened White House staff to NPCs (non-player characters, a gaming term for computer-controlled in-game characters) who can’t say the phrase “Tesla” in another tweet. Musk apparently responded to CNBC’s request for comment with an email. containing two “roll on the floor laughing” emoji: “You have nothing to worry about,” he added.
“I would do the right thing,” Musk said.
The Tesla CEO also addressed his disagreements with the Biden administration, claiming they are “not exactly” a dispute.
“Biden has consistently ignored Tesla throughout, falsely claiming that GM dominates the electric car industry when, in fact, Tesla produced more than 300,000 EVs last quarter and GM made just 26,” he told CNBC. However, he added that he “has nothing against Biden otherwise.”
Biden highlighted Tesla’s importance to the expanding US EV business earlier this month, calling it “our nation’s largest EV manufacturer.”
According to CNBC, it’s unclear if Musk will visit the White House any time soon, while some in the administration are reportedly trying to get Musk to talk about Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan. Perhaps the mythical meeting will finally take place if Musk refrains from making jokes on Twitter for a while.
