Fani Willis criticizes Jim Jordan for the investigation into Trump’s election case: “He lacks basic knowledge of the law”

Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis responded Thursday to Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan over his investigation of her Trump election interference case.

Late last month, Jordan (R-Oh.) demanded a tranche of documents detailing communications between Willis and federal officials about former President Donald Trump, arguing that her case could interfere in the 2024 election.

But Willis, a Democrat, complained and chided in her response Thursday that “it is clear that you lack a basic understanding of the law.”

Notably, Jordan failed to take the bar exam despite graduating from law school.

“Your attempt to invoke Congressional authority to intrude and interfere in an active criminal case in Georgia is in flagrant disagreement with the Constitution,” Willis wrote in a blistering nine-page letter to Jordan.

“There is absolutely no support for Congress to seek to second-guess or in any way supervise an ongoing criminal investigation and prosecution in Georgia.”

Fani Willis began her investigation into Donald Trump and his allies in 2021 after audio surfaced of the former president’s quest to find votes.

He stressed that his “violation of Georgia’s sovereignty is offensive and will not stand.”

Willis had filed 41 charges against Trump and 18 of his allies last month for alleged meddling in the 2020 Georgia election, including one count of racketeering against each of them.

Trump specifically faces 13 charges and has already pleaded not guilty, vehemently denying any wrongdoing.

Willis revealed several examples of federal funding for programs that his office has taken advantage of, which was a key data set Jordan sought.

Instead of providing all the material Jordan requested, she tore his letter piece by piece with her response and provided him with examples of racist threats she has endured.

“As it appears you have a vested interest in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, you should consider ordering the USDOJ to investigate the racist threats my staff and I have received due to this investigation,” he wrote.

Jordan has pursued a similar strategy against other prosecutors who have targeted Trump. Earlier this year, he subpoenaed Mark Pomerantz, a former attorney with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

Bragg, who filed a 34-count indictment against Trump over an alleged hush money payment scheme that was revealed in April, sued him in response.

On Thursday, Jordan sent a letter to special counsel Jack Smith informing him of his congressional investigation into allegations of prosecutorial misconduct by Jay Bratt, one of Smith’s top attorneys.

In addition to chairing the House Judiciary Committee, Jordan also chairs the Subcommittee on the Militarization of the Federal Government.

A spokesperson for the Judiciary Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump faces a total of 91 felony charges spanning four different indictments that could result in a prison sentence of more than 700 years.

He remains the overwhelming favorite in the 2024 Republican race.
