France ordered Apple in early September to stop sales of the iPhone 12 and “fix” current smartphones to bring them into line with European electromagnetic radiation standards. The increase in outgoing electromagnetic radiation observed by regulators over time appears to be a product of successive software updates made by Apple, and was not there when the iPhone 12 was released in 2020.
According to the ANFR, Apple must “withdraw the iPhone 12 from the French market as of September 12 because the model exceeds the limit” of electromagnetic absorption by the body. The agency also ordered Apple to recall all iPhone 12s sold in the country. Ministers later declared that while the radiation level was higher than the established standard, it was not harmful and that people could continue using their phones.
Apple later announced that it would release a software update for iPhone 12 owners in France to address radiation issues. French regulator ANFR responded by stating that the software update would be tested. If the electromagnetic waves radiated by the device changed, ANFR stated that it would adjust the model to the European standards used in France and that the recall order would be withdrawn.
