When the Constitution of independent India came into force, one of the lines read: “India, i.e. Bharat, will be a union of states.” However, a few years ago a petition was filed with the Supreme Court demanding that the name of the country be changed to a single name: Bharat.

A video in which India is referred to by nine different names recently went viral. According to the video, the country has previously been called by nine different names.
India has been known as Jambudweep, Bharatkhand, Himvarsh, Ajnabhavarsh, Bharavarsh, Aryavart, Hind, Hindustan and India since ancient times. So far, the video has received more than 14 million views on Instagram. The enlightening video left people speechless, with some also pointing out some names from other nations.

According to legend, the Indus River and the fertile region along its banks inspired the names Hind, Hindustan and India. The name Bharat is believed to have been derived from the Ramayana of the name of one of Dashrath’s sons and Lord Ram’s brother, Bharat, who was assigned the responsibility of ruling the kingdom of Ayodhya during Lord Ram’s exile to the forest with his wife, Sita, and younger brother Lakshman.
Some theories also suggest that the name of our country, Bharat, is derived from the son of Dushyanta and Shakuntala, King Bharat. Other than that, terminologies like Bharatmuni and Rajarshi Bharat were employed in Natyashastra. Another intriguing fact is that in his description of Mauryan India, the Greek historian Megasthenes referred to India as Indica.
India got its name “India” during the British colonial period. The term “India” was derived from the word “Indus”, which refers to the Indus River that flows through the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. The British used the name “India” to refer to the entire subcontinent under their control.
India gained independence from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947. This historic event marked the end of nearly 200 years of British rule in the Indian subcontinent.
The independence movement, spearheaded by prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and others, culminated in the establishment of two separate nations: India and Pakistan.
Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India. This day is now celebrated annually as the Independence Day of India.
