Nichole Foley worked at Google for 12.5 years. When the company run by Sundar Pichai had layoffs, she lost her job. This happened while she was on maternity leave, caring for her 10-week-old baby.

“I am heartbroken and devastated to say the least, especially while I am on leave with a 10-week-old baby. However, I will always be grateful for all my time at Google and for the incredible people I was able to work with, who I call my friends and, most importantly, my family,” Foley wrote in her Instagram post, where she has gained more of 10,000 likes.

The comments on Foley’s post showed that his situation was, unfortunately, not uncommon. Others shared their own stories about losing their jobs while on maternity leave and the complicated feelings that come with such a situation.

Someone in the comments mentioned that in the European Union it is illegal to fire someone during maternity leave.

They suggested that such protections should be adopted elsewhere as well. Another person expressed understanding and shared her own story of how Meta fired her while she was on maternity leave.

“I’m so sorry this happened to you. Meta fired me earlier this year while she was on maternity leave, which was both terrifying and infuriating. I am lucky to have landed a fantastic new position, but I know how discouraging those first few weeks were when she was still trying to process it.” they wrote.
