What is a cold moon?

According to CNN, the term “Cold Moon” was first used by Native Americans to describe the lower temperatures often associated with December in the Northern Hemisphere. Other names for her include Snow Moon, Winter-Making Moon, and even Antler-Shedding Moon. This time of year is when many species of deer begin to shed their antlers, which explains the last word. Each year, the antlers tend to lengthen.

The longer duration of the Cold Moon offers greater viewing possibilities during the long hours of winter. The Old Farmer’s Almanac states that the Winter Solstice Moon “takes the highest path across the sky and remains above the horizon longer than any Moon; therefore it is the longest night.”

When will it appear?

The Cold Moon, the thirteenth and final full moon of 2023, will reach its zenith on December 26, the day after Christmas. CNN reports that the event will take place over at least three nights instead of just one. The moon will remain bright until December 27, having risen on Monday.

Choose a location that allows you to have unobstructed views of the horizon if you want to see the Cold Moon up close. Betelgeuse in Orion and Capella in Auriga are the two bright stars between which the Cold Moon will shine.
