Hundreds of passengers stranded at a train station
As many as 800 passengers of a Chennai-bound train were stranded at Srivaikuntam in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district after heavy rains that were unusual for the area caused chaos, according to an official on Monday. Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts in Tamil Nadu are also paralyzed due to rains. The train, which left the temple city of Tiruchendur and headed to Chennai, left its passengers stranded in Srivaikuntam, the area worst affected by the floods, for almost twenty hours. On Sunday, December 17, the Tiruchendur-Chennai Egmore Express left at 8:25 pm. According to a railway official, the train was stopped at Srivaikuntam railway station due to flooding and heavy rain.
After heavy rains lashed a part of Tamil Nadu, the state administration decided to call in the Army, Navy and Air Force to help restore normalcy. Thousands of people have been evacuated from areas devastated by the rains. Transportation on the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur segment, between Srivaikuntam and Seydunganallur, has been suspended, according to Southern Railway, due to “ballast” being washed away, tracks “hanging” and water flowing over the railway tracks. Many rail services passing through southern areas have been completely cancelled, partially paralyzed and rerouted.
The temple city of Tiruchendur, located in the Thoothukudi district, also suffered very significant rainfall, with measurements ranging between 62 and 69 cm, according to the PTI news agency. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has assigned four ministers, Udhayanidhi Stalin, EV Velu, P Moorthy and RS Rajakannappan, to oversee rescue and relief efforts in the flood-affected districts. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister requested a meeting to discuss Tuesday’s rainy conditions in the state. Additionally, he requested funding for the relief efforts being carried out in Chennai in the wake of the recent effects of Cyclone Michaung.
