As the popularity of protein shakes continues to rise, a dark shadow hangs over their widespread consumption.

Recent incidents have shed light on the dangers that lurk within those shaker bottles, revealing a harsh reality often overshadowed by the relentless search for the perfect body.

On August 15, 2020, a 16-year-old boy named Rohan Godhania, of Indian origin and based in London, passed away after consuming a protein shake.

She fell ill immediately after drinking the shake, and unfortunately her condition deteriorated over the next three days, resulting in irreversible brain damage.

Following this tragic incident, a senior UK official expressed the need to include health warnings on protein drinks to prevent similar situations in the future.

According to a Metro report, the teen’s father bought the protein drink for his son to help him gain muscle mass, as he was described as “quite skinny.”

Unfortunately, Rohan experienced the effects of a rare genetic condition known as ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency after consuming the drink.

This condition led to the excessive breakdown of ammonia in his bloodstream, causing its levels to rise to a lethal point.

According to a BBC report from an inquest at the Milton Keynes Coroner’s Court in Buckinghamshire, it was initially impossible to determine the cause of death during the post-mortem examination.

According to the news outlet, it is reported that consuming a large amount of protein can also activate the disease.

“Regarding these protein drinks, my preliminary opinion on them is that I should write to one of the regulatory authorities that some type of warning should be put on the packaging of these drinks because, although OTC is a rare condition, it can have harmful effects. if someone drinks [one] and causes a protein spike,” said coroner Tom Osborne.
