Shivaji was crowned king of the Maratha Empire in a lavish ceremony on June 6, 1674 at the Raigad fort. In the Hindu calendar it was the 13th day of the first fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha in the year 1596.

A passenger train traveling between Mansi and Saharsa, India, jumps the tracks on a bridge across the Bagmati River. The government puts the official death toll at 268 plus another 300 missing; however, the death toll is generally believed to be closer to 1,000.
