Controversy
In 1984, Keshub was non-executive chairman of Union Carbide India Limited when the devastating Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984 occurred, claiming the lives of 3,787 people according to the Government of Madhya Pradesh. In June 2010, Mahindra and six other former employees of the Union Carbide subsidiary were sentenced to two years in prison each and a fine of Rs 1,00,000. All of the Indian nationals involved were over 70 years old and were released on bail shortly after the sentencing.
