Three homeless men were shot to death while they slept on the streets of Los Angeles this week, and police believe a serial killer is behind the wave of deaths.
The unknown assailant began his deranged attacks on Sunday shortly after 3 a.m., when he killed a 37-year-old man who was sleeping in an alley in the city’s Westmont neighborhood.
The killer struck again almost 24 hours later, this time against a 62-year-old man behind a building.
The third victim, a 52-year-old man, was killed around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
“What is common among these homicides is that each of the victims was in an open area, whether it was a sidewalk or an alley. They were alone,” said LAPD Chief Michel Moore.
“We believe that a single individual approached each of them and shot and killed each of them while they were sleeping… There are similarities in each of the three cases.”
Moore called the killing spree a “series” but declined to call the suspect a serial killer.

The identity of the suspect remains a mystery: the police have only established that he is a “possible man” who was acting alone.
He was captured on surveillance footage wearing a hoodie and driving a dark-colored sedan, Los Angeles police said.
The department established a 24/7 task force and tip line to expedite the capture of the homeless serial killer, and increased patrols in areas where people are known to be sleeping on the streets.

The city is working to open emergency shelters that are normally relegated to inclement weather to get as many homeless people off the streets as possible.
City staff are also flooding the streets to encourage homeless people to seek shelter or, at a minimum, stay in groups until the attacker is apprehended.
“Our message to the homeless community is clear: do not sleep alone tonight. Seek shelter, seek services, stay together, seek support,” said Mayor Karen Bass.

The homeless serial killer scare comes more than 20 months after Gerald Brevard III was accused of stalking and assaulting homeless people in the Big Apple and Washington, DC.
Brevard, who was also homeless, allegedly attacked three homeless people as they slept on the streets of major metropolitan areas.
He seriously injured two of his victims and killed one, investigators allege.
