Macklemore speaks at pro-Palestinian rally in DC where protesters called for Israel’s destruction: ‘This is genocide’

Rapper Macklemore said it was “beautiful to watch” the huge crowd at the pro-Palestine rally in Washington DC on Saturday, where tens of thousands showed up to call for a ceasefire and the destruction of Israel.

“They told me to shut up, they told me to investigate, to come back, that it’s too complex to say anything, to stay silent right now,” the singer, whose legal name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, said from the podium.

“In the last three weeks, I went back and did some research, I can teach,” the “Thrift Shop” singer told the crowd. “I don’t know everything, but I know enough to know that this is a genocide.”

He noted in his quick speech that he was not the most “qualified” to speak about the controversy.

Thousands of people flocked to the nation’s capital chanting, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and blaming President Joe Biden and other American politicians for genocide on Saturday. The chant is widely considered anti-Semitic because it implies the elimination of Israel and its people.

The rapper said he was “deeply hurt by Israelis who lost their loved ones” but did not believe in “killing innocent humans in retaliation.”

“That is why I support people around the world who are calling for a ceasefire. “We are witnessing a genocide unfolding in Palestine at this very moment.”

At the event in DC, many speakers criticized the president, especially his promise to send $14 billion in aid to Israel.

“Biden, Biden, you can’t hide! We accuse you of genocide!

His supporters attended the rally to protest the deaths of 9,000 Palestinians in Gaza due to airstrikes following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.

A spokesperson for the Chicago Chapter of the American Palestinian Community Network said Biden was “dehumanizing” Palestinians and that “Israel has no right to exist as a racist state.”

Marte White, who said he was from Community Movement Builders – a national black activist group – said that “Israel can go to hell.”
