Magnet fishermen almost literally had their hobby blow up in their faces after accidentally dredging a live grenade from a canal in Scotland.
“The nerves started to kick in,” Bob, one of the sticky anglers, told the South West News Service of the exciting incident, which occurred on October 10 in Linlithgow.
He specializes in this ever-growing sport, in which people use magnetic-tipped ropes to fish for unexpected metal artifacts in bodies of water.
This particular group is known for uploading their catches, which include vintage train lights, ammunition boxes and more, to their more than 475,000 followers on their TikTok channel, “Magnet Fishing Edinburgh.”
The couple discovered that their hobby was the bomb in more ways than one after accidentally dragging a live World War II grenade while fishing from a bridge on Union Canal.
“At first we didn’t find anything, so we took a break to get food,” Bob remembers. “Our second launch was when we found the grenade and realized the situation we were in.”

The exciting clip shows one of the magnet fishermen pulling the rusty, unexploded ordnance out of the drink like a combustible ball and chain.
Despite feeling nervous about the discovery, the couple tried to stay calm and “make sure everyone was safe and protected,” he said.
“There were a couple of people passing by and we advised them to take the other way,” recalled Bob, who later informed the authorities of the situation.
“Once we got it, we ended up contacting the police, and they brought a bomb to come and deal with it,” he recalled. “The officer came over and told us, ‘We have good news and bad news; The good news is that they have saved Linlithgow, but the bad news is that their magnet will explode with the grenade.’”

Bomb technicians later took the grenade to a local field and detonated it at a safe distance from everyone.
In a similarly explosive discovery in 2019, a magnetic fisherman dredged a World War I grenade from a river in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
