One Marine was killed in a homicide at Camp Lejeune Wednesday night and a second Marine was detained on suspicion of involvement, the base said.
Base authorities detained the Marine around 10:15 p.m. after an incident that occurred at a barracks on the North Carolina base that same afternoon, according to a base statement.
The statement called the death a homicide and described the other Marine as a suspect, but did not provide any other details, including how the Marine died.
The sprawling Camp Lejeune covers approximately 240 square miles and is home to the II Marine Expeditionary Force.
Its beaches and firing ranges provide training in amphibious assaults and urban warfare and is used for both US Marine training and exercises involving other military forces around the world.

The death occurred two days before the base held an annual training known as the Urgent Response Exercise that “provides an opportunity for tenant commands to develop and exercise emergency security procedures,” according to a news release. .
In 2021, a Marine was shot and wounded in a barracks on the base.
Authorities later determined the shooting was accidental.
