Mount Everest Day – May 29
The Nepalese government and the mountaineering community plan to celebrate Everest Day on May 29 with a parade around Kathmandu and a ceremony honoring veteran Sherpa climbers and guides.
1968 – Famous wrestler Dara Singh set a record as world wrestling champion.
May 29, 1968 was a historic day for India in wrestling when Dara Singh was crowned World Champion. In Mumbai (then Bombay) he defeated Lou Thesz of the USA to win the title.
Dara finally retired from the sport in 1983 after being in over 500 fights. Amazingly, he never lost a game during his career.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa became the first climbers to summit Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Today marks the 67th anniversary of the feat. Located in the Mahalangur Himal subrange of the Himalayas, Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level.
Hillary and Tenzing were part of the 9th British Everest Expedition, led by John Hunt. The expedition set up base camp in March 1953. The final camp was set up on the South Col.
