McCarthy claimed Trump was depressed and stopped eating after 2020 loss, Cheney book says

Upset by his 2020 election loss, Donald Trump reportedly stopped eating and became depressed after his departure from the White House, prompting his staff to encourage Rep. Kevin McCarthy to visit him at his Florida estate, according to a book by upcoming appearance written by former House colleague Liz. Cheney.

McCarthy (R-Calif.) reportedly made the claim while defending his trip to Mar-a-Lago three weeks after the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Furious about the visit, then-House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) confronted him about the trip.

“Mar-a-Lago? What the hell, Kevin? Cheney rebuked, according to his upcoming book to which CNN had prior access.

“They’re really worried,” McCarthy responded. “Trump isn’t eating, so they asked me to come see him.”

“What? You went to Mar-a-Lago because Trump isn’t eating?” Cheney asked.

“Yes, he’s very depressed,” McCarthy responded.

Cheney also accused McCarthy of lying repeatedly. A Trump spokesman vehemently denied her account.

“Liz Cheney is a loser who is now lying to sell a book that should be in the sales section of the fiction section or repurposed as toilet paper,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told The Post.

“These are nothing more than completely made-up stories because President Trump is the clear favorite to be the Republican candidate and the strongest candidate to defeat the corrupt Joe Biden. “Liz clearly suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome and needs to address the underlying issues in her personal life.”

A McCarthy spokesman echoed much of that sentiment toward Cheney, but stopped short of an outright denial.

“For Cheney, first it was Trump Derangement Syndrome, and now it’s apparently McCarthy Derangement Syndrome as well,” the spokesperson said.

McCarthy had been furious with Trump on January 6, 2021, when rioters ransacked the Capitol, according to CNN.

In a local radio interview days later, McCarthy recounted a phone call with the former president in the midst of the riots.

“I was the first one to call him,” he told KERN. “I asked the president, he has a responsibility. You know what the president does, but you know what? “We all do it.”

On January 28, 2021, McCarthy traveled to Trump’s prized Palm Beach estate and apparently patched things up with the Republican Party heavyweight.

The two discussed topics such as strategies for Republicans to regain the majority in the House of Representatives, according to a public statement at the time.

That meeting had been widely maligned by Democratic critics and by Cheney, who served as vice chairman of the now-defunct Select Committee on January 6.

Several months later, in May 2021, Cheney was ousted from her position as chair of the House Republican Conference, the third-largest House Republican position at the time.

McCarthy was ousted as president last month in a mutiny that Cheney praised.

His book, “Oath and Honor,” hits shelves on December 5.
