Orange alert in parts of Kerala and Puducherry

Excessive rains persist in many regions of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Till November 24, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) was forecasting the probability of significant rains in some isolated areas of Kerala. The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of all public and private schools in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Pudhukottai and Niligiri districts due to forecast heavy rain. On November 22, Pathanamthitta district in the state of Kerala was placed under red alert by the IMD. A Shibu, the Pathanamthitta district collector, issued an order on November 24 banning night traffic between 7 pm and 6 am, as well as tourist activities such as kayaking and boating in the hilly regions of the district.

Rains in Tamil Nadu

The warning was issued because there was a possibility of continued heavy rainfall, which could lead to landslides, mudslides and minor localized flooding. Travelers visiting Sabarimala have been urged to exercise caution and vigilance, especially at night, due to the red alert issued in the district. An orange alert has also been issued in Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki districts for November 23. The hilly terrain of Thiruvananthapuram district and numerous roads were flooded due to heavy rains. The IMD also issued a yellow alert in all other districts except Kannur and Kasaragod districts in Kerala.

Over the next five days, Kerala may experience light to medium rain along with thunder and lightning due to cyclonic circulations over Tamil Nadu, according to the weather service. An IMD press release states that thunderstorm, light to moderate rain and gusty winds are possible today at one or two places in the state districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur , Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur. It also rained heavily in Karaikal and Puducherry regions the previous day. In light of the circumstances, the territorial government announced a holiday for schools on Wednesday.
