Pilot dies after small plane crashes at Bill and Hillary Clinton airport

One person died after a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Arkansas.

The single-engine plane, a Cirrus SR 22, crashed around 1:15 p.m. Sunday, hitting the ground just north of a building at the Little Rock airport.

There was no one on board except the pilot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

The plane’s chassis was reduced to smoking remains after eight firefighting units responded to the scene.

“It was a total loss,” said Little Rock Fire Department Chief Delphone Hubbard.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.

Smoke from the wreckage of the plane billows into the sky following the fatal crash at the Little Rock airport Sunday afternoon.

The airport was closed for an hour while rescuers contained the wreckage of the plane.

It was the second fatal accident at Clinton Airport in less than a year.

On February 22 of last year, a plane carrying five environmental employees from Arkansas crashed shortly after takeoff.

That plane crashed in a wooded area and caused a fierce fire. All five on board died.
