Recently, it was reported that India and Saudi Arabia formed a joint working group for the west coast refinery project. On Monday, two days after the launch of the India-Middle East Economic Corridor, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Saudi Arabia as one of India’s most important strategic partners. However, the change between the two sides came during the state visit of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia when they agreed to establish a joint working group to accelerate the West Coast refinery project. PM Modi reportedly said that Saudi Arabia is one of India’s most important strategic partners and two of the fastest growing countries in the world and our partnership is important for the stability of the entire region. He added that we took the historic step of connecting India, West Asia and Europe through an economic corridor. In addition to that, by connecting the two countries, the corridor will help increase the economic growth of the energy sector and digitalization. In October 2019, Modi and Prince Bin Salman co-chaired the first meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council. Furthermore, the Crown Prince’s state visit has significance as it took place weeks after Saudi Arabia became a member of the BRICS during the Johannesburg summit. However, the discussion focused on defense, energy, education and technology, health and tourism as areas of possible cooperation.
Reportedly, of the eight deals that were sealed included one between the Central Vigilance Commission of India and the Saudi and Anti-Corruption Authority and another between Saudi and Indian banks. The Indian National Institute of Technology and Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation signed an agreement during the visit. Following the meeting at Hyderabad House with Mr Modi, Prince Bin Salman visited President Droupadi Murmu and attended a banquet organized in his honour.
