After failing to provide his driver’s license and evading a traffic stop in his patrol car marked last week, an Orlando, Florida police officer was taken into custody and removed from duty. A marked City of Orlando Police Department SUV was speeding at 80 mph in a 45 mph zone on June 6 when a Seminole County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted it. When the van was spotted, the officer, who was looking away, quickly turned around and began to pursue the patrol car at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The officer addressed police about his speed after the officer pulled over and turned on his emergency lights that were not on when the chase began.

Officer Alexander Shaouni finally stopped, “What are you doing?” he questioned. “Man, she was going to work. Why do you try to stop her when she drives to work? The deputy informs the officer that he was traveling almost twice as fast as allowed. Shaouni dismisses the deputy’s comment and instead draws attention to his uniform, emphasizing once again that he was on his way to work when he was stopped.
Shaouni pointed to his vest, which was embroidered with his name and badge, and said, “She was going to work.” “What does she seem to be dressed for?” The next step is to ask Shaouni for his driver’s license. She answers “no” when asked to give her license to the deputy. She then returns to her police car and drives away from the crime scene, leaving behind her car and her license plate number. The officer’s identity is clearly visible on the front of her police vest in body camera footage from the event.
Shaouni was ultimately detained after the incident and charged with reckless driving, evading arrest, and nonviolent resisting an officer. She was “relieved” of her duties while the Sheriff’s Department criminal investigation and an Internal Affairs investigation were ongoing.
