Protesters storm port to block military supplies for Israel

More than 100 protesters descended on the port of Oakland in an attempt to stop a cargo ship they said was carrying weapons bound for Israel.

The demonstration, organized by the Arab Organization and Resources Center, took place on Friday in the port of California.

“We are sending the alarm that the United States government is, in fact, sending these weapons to Israel,” AROC press coordinator Wassim Hage told SFGate. “We want people to be aware that the United States will continue to use our ports to facilitate the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.”

Protests have erupted repeatedly in the United States and around the world since Israel launched its effort to eliminate Hamas, following the terrorist group’s harrowing Oct. 7 surprise attack on civilians, during which it annihilated families, killed children in their beds and murdered babies. More than 1,400 Israelis were killed in the attack.

Hamas has repeatedly vowed to destroy Israel and kill all its citizens.

It is unclear whether the ship was actually carrying weapons or even heading to Israel. Several protesters attempted to “occupy the ship,” AROC executive director Lara Kiswani told the newspaper.

The ship finally departed hours later, as protesters vowed to meet it at its next destination: Tacoma, Washington.
