Donut comes here with a gun, a popular San Francisco bakery warns police.
Reem’s California, a chain of local Arab street food restaurants and bakeries, announced that it is enforcing a policy of not serving anyone with a weapon.
“NO COPS ALLOWED. That is the confirmed policy of the Reem’s bakery chain,” the San Francisco Police Officers Association said. he tweeted on August 24.
It included a screenshot of an email apparently from a Reem executive to the San Francisco Police Officers Association that said the company has a policy of “no service to anyone who is armed and in uniform.”
The union had urged the bakery to post signs about its policy after it denied service to a uniformed officer.
“We are not asking Reem’s or any company with bigoted politics to serve our officials,” the association explained in a follow-up tweet. “We’re asking you to take charge of your discriminatory policy and put up a sign so we know not to spend money at your establishment, whether it’s on or off duty.”
The Mission Bakery opened shortly before the pandemic hit the Bay Area and has become a popular attraction.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association tweeted this photo from Reem’s California, including a screenshot of an email apparently from an executive to the association that said the company has a policy of “no service to anyone who is armed and With Uniform”.
It was founded by Reem Assil, who describes herself online as a chef “working at the intersection of food, community and social justice.”
In a statement to the San Francisco Gate, Reem’s said it “has a deep commitment to elevating social and racial justice in our communities.
“This includes fostering a safe environment for our staff and customers. In a time of increasing gun violence, particularly affecting people of color, youth, and queer people, we believe that maintaining a strict no-gun policy in our restaurant keeps us safer.”

He added: “Many members of our community have been affected by gun violence, whether it was an experience on the streets of San Francisco or Oakland, having come from war or occupation, or having increased fear due to a growing climate of political extremism.
“Too often, black and people of color and the poor are victims of this violence,” the statement continued. “At Reem’s our goal is to provide a space where people can eat delicious Arabic food and work together to strengthen our community, without fear of violence or harassment.
“We invite our community to come forward and join us in creating that culture of care and resilience.”

But the restaurant told Mission Local that it will continue to host the officers when they are not on duty.
“This policy is for armed officers and we let police officers know that we welcome them to our facility when they are off duty and unarmed.”
With the announcement, Reem’s has become the latest San Francisco restaurant to deny service to police officers.
Reem’s operates several Arabic street food restaurants and bakeries throughout the area.
In 2021, the owners of all-day brunch restaurant Hilda and Jesse apologized amid backlash after three uniformed officers were asked to leave, and earlier this year, a Pizza Squared cashier was fired after telling the police officers that they are not welcome in the business. .
