Residents of the Millennium Tower, better known as the Leaning Tower of San Francisco, were left with a $6.8 million bill after a much-needed renovation project failed to fix the troubled building’s 29-inch tilt. luxury and caused unpleasant sewage spills.
Repairs to correct the tower’s infamous 29-inch tilt ended with residents billed $10 per square foot of condo space, costing tenants $6.8 million in total, as the project cost $20 million more than the expected $100 million, NBC Bay Area reported.
The 545-foot-tall tower continued to lean and sink further to the west after architects attempted to repair its foundation last fall. While the problem has not been fixed, residents were told they had until October to pay for so-called repairs.
“I don’t know what to do with this place, because it’s expensive; I can’t live in it,” said Mehrdad Mostafavi, who moved in June after sewage started coming out of his kitchen sink.

While struggling to clean up the sewage buildup, something Millennium engineers warned could occur due to the tower’s tilt, Mostafavi received a bill for nearly $14,000 from the tower’s homeowners association.
“It’s a luxurious and famous building, but unfortunately it’s not like that for me as the owner,” Mostafavi told the outlet. “I’m suffering a lot”.

Mostafavi said the bill came after he had already dipped into his retirement savings account to pay for his trashed kitchen.
“I’m really having a hard time figuring out how I can leave for retirement, how to get out of this apartment and make my retirement,” he said. “It is very expensive…. “They keep asking for more money and this is not acceptable to me.”

After the owners were compensated for the loss of property value, the tower association received $150 million to cover the costs, but it was still not enough given the troubled project’s numerous setbacks, the association said. .
“Delays and increased requirements from the city resulted in significant unforeseen increases in project costs,” the association’s letter to residents said.
The bill presented shared a rough accounting of the $6.8 million owed by residents, and sought to assure homeowners that they were not the only ones who had to pay, as the tower developer and repair contractor contributed $10 million. to compensate for cost overruns.
According to recent monitoring data, since work was completed in June, the building’s slope has only slightly improved.
The 29-inch pitch was first revealed to residents of the luxury building in 2016.
