Krishna is referred to in Hindu epics as the god of love, kindness and compassion. He was born at midnight to Queen Devaki and King Vasudeva in a prison in present-day Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. He is also known for using his extraordinary abilities to achieve miracles and play mischievous pranks. This year, September 6 and 7 will be used to celebrate Janmashtami. According to legend, Kansa, Queen Devaki’s brother, heard a premonition that his eighth child would be the cause of his disappearance. After learning this, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudev and then executed each of her six children, one by one.
Kansa tried to kill Krishna, but before he could, Krishna was sent out of the dungeon safely. Krishna was placed in the care of King Vasudeva’s friends, Yashoda and Nanda, in Vrindavan after the latter crossed the river Yamuna carrying Krishna on his head in a basket. Hoping that King Kansa would not hurt her because the prophecy said that his eighth “son” would be the reason for Kansa’s death, Vasudev returned with his daughter who was born on the same day. But he threw the child against a rock. She rose to the heavens, assuming the appearance of the Goddess Durga, and warned him that he would die rather than be hurt.
The prophecy was finally fulfilled when Krishna became an adult and murdered Kansa, freeing the city from Kansa’s brutal tyranny. The love, warmth and beauty that Lord Krishna symbolizes are honored on the day of Krishna Janmashtami. On this day, believers maintain a fast, dress traditionally, bathe and decorate the idols of Lord Krishna with new clothes and jewelery and ask for blessings for the well-being of their families. Additionally, many practice ceremonial fasts and decorate their homes with flowers and Rangoli. Some people eat light sattvic meals throughout the day, while others observe ‘nirjala Vrat’ until midnight, which is believed to be the time of the birth of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna’s puja is performed on Nishita Kaal since he was born at midnight. After commemorating the birth of Krishna at midnight, devotees present their beloved makhana (white butter), milk and curd to the idols.
