Teenager impaled by own pliers after slipping on ice in gruesome ‘freak accident’: ‘Something I’ve never seen before’

A 15-year-old Kansas boy suffered a horrific “freak accident” when he slipped on ice and was impaled by a pair of pliers.

Joey Zeman was shoveling snow outside his family’s home in the town of WaKeeney on Saturday when he took a spill and realized his pliers were missing, KWCH reported.

“Well, I got up and noticed my pliers weren’t in my bag,” the teen told the outlet. “And I looked down and they were inside me.”

Gory images shared by his mother, Alicia Zeman, show the handle of the tool lodged inside his body, just above his hip, with the sheath hanging at his side.

“He tried to get them out a couple of times when I first saw they were there,” Joey told KWCH. “They did not leave. I called mom and told her that she was on her way to the emergency room because she had the pliers inside me.”

Zeman thought he was joking.

“I couldn’t believe it because I thought maybe he just punctured it or (there was) a little hole or something, not literally stuck there and hanging,” he said.

Joey went to the local hospital, where he was treated by surprised nurse practitioner Sarah Gibbs.

“(At) critical access hospitals, you see a lot of everything, and that’s something I’ve never seen before and probably will see again,” Gibbs told KWCH.

“I immediately contacted our backup surgical options to see what was available for (the) worst-case scenario, if we removed him and he had internal bleeding that needed to be controlled quickly with surgery,” he said.

Joey was flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

“His Aunt Addie met him there because it was closer, and we still had a 3 hour drive!” Zeman wrote on Facebook, where he shared an X-ray image showing the pliers firmly embedded in his hip bone.

“They took them out in the emergency room and then took him in for a CT scan to make sure no major organs were affected. The doctor told us that the tip of the pliers was embedded in his bone and that’s why he couldn’t get them out on his own. After spending the night, we headed home,” he wrote.

“He won’t be able to bear weight for a while until he heals! … The outcome could have been much worse and we are very grateful that it was not like that,” Zeman added.

Joey is now at home on crutches, but is expected to make a full recovery. He said next time he will be more careful when shoveling snow.

His mom also had some words of caution.

“Just don’t carry pliers on the ice,” he told her, Live Now Fox reported.
