Millions of people will soon travel on trains, planes and automobiles as they make their annual Thanksgiving pilgrimage.
Deloitte’s 2023 Holiday Survey found that 48% of Americans plan to travel during the holidays.
That’s more than the 31% who traveled between Thanksgiving and mid-January last year.
Relatively calm weather has dominated the U.S. for the past few weeks, but computer models indicate a more active scene could take hold just as Thanksgiving travel begins.
“It’s too early to put numbers on it, but keep in mind we could see a bit of an active pattern,” said FOX weather meteorologist Jane Minar.
Here are the outlines of the forecast ahead of one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Pre-Thanksgiving Outlook
The change in pattern begins toward the end of the week, when the jet stream begins to dip southward.
The FOX Forecast Center is monitoring the possibility of storms on both sides of the country by the end of the week.

This could mean snow in the northern part of the country, and possible heavy rain in the southern part between November 16 and 19.
This would likely create more potential for travel issues leading up to Thanksgiving week.
Thanksgiving Week Outlook
The Climate Prediction Center expects above-average temperatures and precipitation across the eastern two-thirds of the country during Thanksgiving week.

The FOX Forecast Center is watching for the possibility of a stronger storm developing in the western US during Thanksgiving week.
This would mean heavy snowfall, gusty winds and rainy weather across the region.
