According to the Reuters news agency, billionaire Elon Musk recently approached artificial intelligence researchers about building a new research center to offer an alternative to ChatGPT.
ChatGPT launched on November 30, though it’s part of a larger collection of technologies developed by San Francisco-based startup OpenAI, which has a close partnership with Microsoft. Since then, it has attracted millions of users, many of whom use it for work-related tasks like composing emails, researching topics, etc.
It’s part of a new generation of AI systems that can speak, generate readable text on demand, and even create new images and movies based on what they’ve learned from a massive collection of digital books, online articles, and other material. It works similar to a scripted interaction between the AI system and the human asking the questions.
The tool is free for anyone with an internet connection and is meant to be easier to use. But OpenAI announced earlier this month that it intends to release a commercial version as well.
Musk has highlighted a number of weird AI-related events in recent weeks, ranging from Bing Chat’s trend of “creepy” comments to ChatGPT’s appearance in the media.
He claimed about five years ago that AI was “much more dangerous than nukes,” a stance he seems to have held even as the world is obsessed with ChatGPT and artificial intelligence.

For the uninitiated, Musk resigned from the OpenAI board in 2018 to avoid any future conflict when Tesla entered the AI industry.
