According to various official and unofficial Chinese maps, the line encircles the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, stretching from the Chinese island of Hainan almost to the Vietnamese coast. The line turns and travels to the west of the Philippines until it comes to an end just south of Taiwan, north of Borneo, near the beaches of Malaysia and Brunei. The exact extent of the alleged coverage of the line has long been a source of speculation. China has been tenacious in trying to move the claim forward, but has never been really clear on what exactly the claim comprises.
