What is menu anxiety and why does Gen Z struggle with it when dining out?

Going out to lunch or dinner with your friends, family or your partner is always special. But once inside the restaurant, we are often faced with the most difficult decision: what do we eat?

Even when we go to our favorite restaurant to eat, the diversity of foods on the menu often leaves us unsure of what to order.

However, if you are a member of Generation Z, the situation is likely to be more serious.

According to a recent study by prominent British food chain Prezzo, virtually every Gen Z you know suffers from “menu anxiety,” a syndrome dubbed by the popular British food company.

What is menu anxiety?

Menu anxiety is a type of stress produced by emotions of dread when faced with a restaurant menu. According to Fortune magazine, the Prezzo restaurant chain interviewed more than 2,000 diners about their comfort level with dining out.

Gen Z had the highest “menu anxiety,” with 34% of those ages 18 to 24 admitting they ask other people at the table to interact with servers on their behalf because they are too nervous to chat themselves themselves.

This is a substantially higher percentage than the usual level of anxiety customers experience when conversing with waiters (21%).

Why does Generation Z suffer from this?

Dean Challenger, CEO of Prezzo, told the New York Post: “While most people look forward to dining out during the holiday season, we know, as our research shows, that it can be stressful for some.”

According to the news portal, the rising cost of eating out, as well as respondents’ concerns about not finding anything they liked on the menu or later regretting what they chose, appeared to be the key drivers of menu anxiety.

According to more than 40% of Gen Z consumers, some even went so far as to say they would never go out to eat if they couldn’t look at the menu beforehand.
