The rescued sailor and dog have been identified as Tim Shaddock and Bella. They were picked up by a tuna boat off the coast of Mexico after a helicopter accompanying the boat spotted them.
The sailor left La Paz in Mexico in April bound for French Polynesia, but a few weeks into the voyage a storm damaged the electronic components of his boat. The sailor said that he was forced to drift for 2 months with only his canine for company with the duo drinking rainwater and raw fish to stay alive. Video of the astonishing rescue of him obtained by the media showed a skinny Tim Shaddock sporting an overgrown gray beard as he spoke to authorities. Shaddock’s dog Bella was seen wagging her tail at the camera crew filming a sailor’s catamaran filled with buckets and other equipment.
In the video, he can be heard telling a man on the boat: “I just got fishing gear, survival gear.” He further states that he had stuck to the trawler and that he had not eaten enough for a long time.
