A 13-year-old Florida honor roll student was arrested for allegedly stabbing his mother to death while she slept next to her newborn daughter, authorities said.
Derek Rosa has been charged as a juvenile in the murder of his mother, 39-year-old Irina Garcia, but Hialeah police publicly identified him because he faces a felony charge of second-degree murder.
The shocking incident began to unfold around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, when Rosa called 911 to report that she “had just murdered her mother,” said Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Hialeah Police Department.
Officers rushed to the family’s apartment on West 79th Street and found Garcia dead in her bedroom, just inches from a crib containing her 14-day-old daughter, who was unharmed, police said, WSVN reported. .
Authorities said they believe Rosa waited until her mother was asleep before stabbing her several times in the neck.

The 13-year-old murder suspect was described as an honors student enrolled in eighth grade at iMater Charter Middle/High School.
Rosa, her little half-sister and her mother were the only three people in the apartment on Thursday. The teen’s stepfather, a truck driver, was in Georgia at the time.

Rosa had no known history of mental health problems and was said to get along well with her stepfather. There was no record of police going to the family’s apartment before Thursday, authorities said.
