Nearly two dozen dirty, hungry dogs were rescued from a Houston home emitting an “unbearable” stench after officers discovered their owner had died “several days” earlier.
The Sept. 27 welfare check for the 52-year-old man led to the discovery of 22 canines by Harris County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies forced entry into the home after signs of decomposition and a putrid odor appeared in the house, a sheriff’s spokesperson told the Houston Chronicle.
The unidentified man had been dead for “several days” and had “a variety of medical problems and was a social recluse, as his relatives described him,” spokesman Thomas Gilliland told the newspaper.
The 22 dogs, which were of different breeds, were rushed to the Houston Humane Society for medical care and shelter.

“The stench of decomposition inside the home was described as unbearable by authorities,” the Houston Humane Society said in an Instagram post. “The house was in poor condition.”
Some of the puppies were malnourished, Gilliland said. It took him a while to get them out “because of the ammonia and the dog feces because they wouldn’t let them out,” he added.
“It was a bad situation.”
Photos released by the Humane Society showed the harsh conditions of the home.
“Medical staff reported that the puppies were plagued by flea infestations, had old wounds, suffered from overgrown nails and suffered from bacterial skin infections,” the organization said.
“These poor dogs’ lives have been turned upside down and they face a challenging road to recovery.”
